Russell started his career as a laboratory technician in the pharmaceutical industry in England before completing an Honours degree in Environmental Studies at Sunderland University in 1984. This degree enabled him to pursue his diverse interests in the environment and use his technical expertise. It also developed his interest in helping people. During his time at Sunderland, he was a volunteer at the Citizens Advice Bureau.
Since moving to Australia in 1988, Russell has worked at the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, NSW State Pollution Control Commission, has filled various scientific roles and undertaken a number of housing management and advisory positions. He’s also developed significant experience in the development of public sector policy in the human services sector of the NSW government.
Due to his interest in the impact of urban living, specifically the health impacts of living in the modern-built environment, Russell is now the Director of Building Harmony Pty., a Building Biology consultancy where he assists homeowners, renters and small businesses. The services he provides include assessment of the health impacts of indoor air quality issues, including those produced by volatile organic compounds (chemicals) in building materials and household products, allergens in and around the home and electromagnetic field issues. He offers practical solutions to the issues he encounters.
